Como Lake Area

What can I do around Pognana Lario?

Lake Como offers some of the most romantic and picturesque sceneries in the world. Find some more information over the area and things to do at the following website:

https://lakecomotravel.com/lake-como-italy/.

Go around by ferry

Pognana Lario is located between Como and Bellagio. Both from Como and Bellagio you can catch ferries (also possible to take your car on the ferry) that can take you all around the Como Lake (https://lakecomotravel.com/boat-tours-ferry-lake-como/).

The ferry routes:

Como is a city at the southern tip of Lake Como. Spots in Como:

  • Duomo di Como, a beautiful example of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture, with a gorgeous marble facade and pretty blue domes
  • Tempio Voltiano, a small science museum dedicated to Allesandro Volta, a local scientist who invented the electrical battery
  • Basilica di Sant’Abbondio, an ancient 11th-century Romanesque church just outside the city’s main walls

After strolling through the city, you can enjoy a ride on the scenic funicular towards Brunate - it takes you up to a height of 1000 mt, where you can enjoy a beautiful landscape. Wanna get even higher for a stunning view? Walk to the Faro Voltiano and walk it to the top - you won’t regret it!

Bellagio (highly recommended), also known as the Pearl of Lake Como, is famous worldwide for its beautiful villas overlooking the water (such as Villa Serbelloni or Villa Melzi), but also for its small yet charming alleys, full of shops, boutiques and restaurants. People love to get lost in the Italian alleys of Bellagio and stop for aperitivo at the coziest bars*.

*Bellagio is also known to be the favorite spot for VIPs, so some prices may get a little “salty”!

Wander the Historic Streets of Nesso: This tiny historic village tucked away on a steep hillside epitomizes the “dolce vita” lifestyle. Embrace a slower pace of life in this traditional town by exploring its cobbled staircases and twisting alleyways. A hotspot is Ponte della Civera, a small bridge from which locals jump in the water in summer.

Visit other villages by the lake

  • Varenna is a popular colorful town - here you can visit the Vezio Castle, a castle haunted by visible ghosts.
  • Bellano, here you can visit the Orrido di Bellano (a natural ravine over 15 million years old)
  • Menaggio, people say that Menaggio’s promenade gives you “one of the best views of Lake Como”.

Rent a boat

Lake Como has several spots where you can rent a boat - our location can provide help in getting a boat organized (it is allowed to dock boats at our location). Some of the best views of Lake Como and the surrounding foothills of the Alps are from the water! Get a boat and enjoy the area speeding past luxury old Italian villas and colorful villages.

SIDE NOTE: there are (powerful) boats for which you do not require a boat license to drive it. Your car license is enough.

Go villa spotting

Go villa spotting by boat or visiting by foot: All around the lake, you can spot beautiful old Villas. Some of the most famous ones:

  • Villa del Balbianello (where the movie Casino Royale was shot)
  • Villa Olmo
  • Villa Balbiano (where the movie House of Gucci was shot)
  • Villa La Gaeta (where the movie James Bond was shot) - fun fact: Elisa always dreamed of marrying at this Villa.
  • Villa Carlotta
  • Villa Monastero

Hiking

All around the lake, we have several hikes, some for the most experienced hikers and others accessible to everyone.

  • A famous hike is Sentiero del Viandante, a trail that dates back to Roman times and is about 45km long (but you can split it into a smaller hike). This is a hike accessible to everyone.
  • Another famous (and accessible to everyone) hike is the Greenway del Lago di Como: a 10km sightseeing path mostly flat (3-4 hours walking) that goes through some beautiful villages. On the way, you can stop to visit Villa Balbianello and Villa Carlotta
